Washington Decided Copper Is a National Priority. Zeus Is Looking for It on US Soil.

October 31, 2026

There is a sentence from Goldman Sachs that has become shorthand for an entire investment thesis: “Copper is the new oil.”1 The bank has argued that the metal sits on a path that could carry it toward 15,000 dollars per tonne, and that the world faces a long-term copper supply gap measured in millions of tonnes by 2030.1 The reason is structural. Electrification, grid expansion, data centers, and the broader energy transition all run on copper, and new copper mines take many years to permit and build.1

For a long time that was a market story. In 2025 it became a policy story. The United States moved to treat domestic copper and other critical minerals as a matter of national priority, through executive action aimed at accelerating American mineral production and through tariff measures designed to favor domestic supply.2

Strip away the slogans and the copper problem is simple to state. Demand is rising on the back of electrification and grid buildout, while the supply side is constrained by the long lead times, permitting hurdles, and falling grades that define modern copper mining.1

Goldman Sachs has put numbers on it, describing a long-term supply gap on the order of millions of tonnes by 2030 and characterizing copper as essential to any net-zero pathway.1 You do not have to accept any single price prediction to accept the direction. When a metal is structurally short and strategically important at the same time, the value of bringing new pounds into production, especially domestic pounds, goes up.
